Dear Erica, My ex-husband is refusing to pay his portion of the credit card debt we still have from when we were married because he says it’s my fault we have so much debt. But I was using those cards to pay for our kids’ food and clothing and to make our home a nice place to live. I almost never spent on myself and always spent on him. We’ve been divorced for three years and still owe close to $20,000 on cards that are in both our names. Before, he was paying his part of the payments. But since he remarried, his wife’s been telling him he doesn’t have to pay and that it’s my responsibility and now he believes her. What can I do? Tax advice of the week: Cut income ahead of benefit changes

Sep 23, 2011 Posted Under: Credit Cards Info

It pays to be ahead of the game on tax law, says Nick Braun in Business Tax Saver. Changes in the offing include child benefit, which is to be scrapped from 2013 for families with at least one higher-rate taxpayer; and the annual investment allowance, which is being reduced from £100,000 per year to £25,000 in April 2012.

Income splitting may help: eg, “transferring shares or properties to a spouse, to ensure there are no higher-rate taxpayers in the home”. Lastly, use the annual investment allowance, a relief that provides a 100% tax deduction for spending on ‘plant and machinery’. If you need to buy vans or computers, for instance, do so now, before the limit is reduced. You could save

The recent boom in the buy-to-let market shows few signs of slowing after landlords revealed they plan to carry on buying properties next year.

According to Assetz, three quarters of buy-to-let investors intend to expand their portfolios in the next 12 months, with strong rental demand the main driver behind the plans.

High and rising rental values and the belief that prices are at or near the bottom were also cited as incentives for portfolio expansion.

Only 10% of investors believe now is a bad time to invest in UK buy to let, with the majority citing concerns about the economy as the main deterrent.

Elsewhere amongst the data, the rewards that landlords are currently reaping were also revealed.
